Salt water fishing at its finest. Fish approximately 1 1/4 hours away from Nanaimo in the beautiful Alberni Inlet. The Whitehouse on Long Lake can set up a private charter fishing out of the Alberni Inlet to suite your needs. Fish for Sockeye, Coho, Spring Salmon or Ling Cod and other bottom species. Crab & prawns can be trapped fresh. Inquire within 1-877-956-1185.

Fishing locally can be extremely rewarding, whether you are fishing salt-water fish, or fishing at one of the many local fresh water lakes, rivers or streams. Rainbow, cutthroat, dolly varden, brown trout are the most common species. Steelhead and salmon in season. Fly fishing is very good all year round. Can fish in Long Lake, Divers Lake & Westwood Lake. Call the Nanaimo Fish and Game Club for more information (250) 754-2846. Salt-Water Charters are available.

Nanaimo offers the largest fleet of dive charter boats. Dive or snorkel with the seals at Snake Island, the spectacular walls of Snake Island or Orelbar Point. Visit the wolf eels at Brekwater Island or Neck Point. For Artificial reef divers, nothing compares to the man-made sites like the Saskatchewan, a 366-foot navy destroyer sunk in 1997, or the 441 foot Cape Breton sunk in 2001. Nanaimo has been awarded the readers Choice Awards by Rodale's Scuba Diving Magazine with eight first place finishes out of 14 for North America.

Bathtub racing at its finest. In July, the Great International World Championship Baththub race begins in Nanaimo Harbour at 11:00 am and finishes at Departure Bay Beach. This event coincides with the Marine Festival & Street Fair. There is a parade and fireworks as well.

The Cadillac Van Isle 360 is a 580 nm (nautical mile) point to point race circumnavigating wild and rugged Vancouver Island, B.C. Canada in June. The Nanaimo Dragon boat society has announced that Nanaimo is continuing a tradition that originated in China 2400 years ago, the Dragon Boat Race Festival. Nanaimo's inaugural three day festival will kick off in July and will introduce this ancient, cultural diverse sport to the City of Nanaimo the 'Harbour City' and the central Vancouver Island area. One drummer to sit at the head of the boat to keep the pace and one steer person to keep everyone one track and a team of 20 enthusiastic men and women working together as one to power this magnificent dragon boat.
