The staff at White House on Long Lake bed & breakfast welcome you to beautiful Nanaimo BC. Known as the Harbour City, Nanaimo is Vancouver Island's second largest city.
The beautiful coastal harbour which we now lovingly call Nanaimo was first occupied by the Coast Salish people whose name was Snuneymuxw (Snuh-NAY-moo) which means 'great and mighty people'. Our city now rests in an area where five separate First Nations villages gathered together for trade and commerce and celebration.
The area was first explored by the Spanish in 1791 and later by Captain George Vancouver. The discovery of coal in 1851 lured miners to the area and Nanaimo was incorporated in 1874 making it the third oldest city in B.C.
With the White House B&B as your accomodations in Nanaimo, you can easily access our colourful past by visiting the area museums as well as a number of pioneer buildings and sites. The Heritage Walk will take you to many of the interesting parks, sights and buildings in Downtown Nanaimo.

Nanaimo Airport (YCD) located in Cassidy just 20km south of Nanaimo.
Floatplane and Seaplane:
Travelling by seaplane is a wonderful option for getting to Nanaimo. The view from these planes can be simply breathtaking, with British Columbia's beautiful scenery all around. In addition to being a picturesque way to get here, float planes also offer the added convenience of being the quickest way to travel to the mainland. Downtown Vancouver is just 20 minutes away, while getting to the Vancouver Airport takes a mere half hour.
There are frequent, daily scheduled flights between Nanaimo and mainland destinations. Times vary slightly with the seasons, as seaplane companies only travel during daylight hours. Float planes can also be chartered for a variety of coastal and island sightseeing tours.
While float planes are small in size, they offer a very safe travel option, as companies strive to keep their fleets in top condition. Safety is of top priority during flight, with life jackets and emergency literature easily accessible.
The White House on Long Lake has its own private Floatplane Dock.
